Compak Opens U.S. Branch

Compak Coffee Grinders has opened a U.S. office in New Jersey with a warehouse of more than 5,500 sq. ft. Among some of the services that will be offered are continuous grinder stock, product showroom, technical assistance and original spare parts.

The introduction to the U.S. market is especially important for the new line of A8 Automatic grinders and the company’s retail and industrial line. The new, 100% automatic grinder is ideal for restaurants because it is intuitive and easy to use, says the firm. The retail line focuses on the supermarket and coffee shop sector with a group of products capable of grinding up to five pounds of coffee per minute.

New Instant Coffee Plant in Vietnam

Thai Hoa Production and Trading Co. Ltd., a leading coffee producer, is building a soluble coffee processing plant in Vietnam, confirming their entrance into the soluble market. Niro A/S of Denmark has been contracted to provide soluble coffee processing equipment. The plant is already under construction near the city of Delat in Lam Dong province. Nguyen Van An, Thai Hoa’s owner, said that the plant was the first coffee processing plant in Vietnam to be located within a plantation helping to provide a regular income for the local farmers that is not so susceptible to the fluctuations in the market price for green beans seen in recent years.

The plant will open at the end of 2009 and will employ 250 local people in both skilled and unskilled roles.

At the same time An Giang Coffee, a subsidiary of Thai Hoa, signed a contract with Thang Long Securities providing authority to issue shareholding to the public and beginning the process of transferring the company from private to public ownership.

Caffè Culture Hosts UK Final of SCAE World Championships

Caffè Culture will host the UK finals of the Specialty Coffee Association of Europe’s (SCAE) World Championships.

Entrants for the SCAE UK’s World Latte Art, World Coffee in Good Spirits and World Cupping competitions will battle it out throughout the two-day event to secure their place at the SCAE World Championships, June 19 – 22nd in Copenhagen. Visitors to the Caffè Culture 2008 will have the opportunity to enjoy the competition first hand as entrants perform a serious of barista skills and tasting tests live in stage.

The partnership between the two organizations will also see Caffè Culture play host to an extended series of workshops presented by the SCAE UK. Designed to provide an invaluable resource to everyone working within the coffee industry, sessions include barista training workshops, from beginners to advanced, along with an in-depth look into everything coffee related- from roasting, grinding and brewing, through to menu planning and coffee bar design. The sessions will be hosted by leading figures within the specialty coffee industry.

Dunkin’ Donuts Plans to Enter Mainland China

About 100 new shops are expected to open in Shanghai, and provinces of Jiangsu, Zhijiang in the People’s Republic of China over the next 10 years. The first shop is scheduled to open this spring.

The company recently granted the franchise rights to Mercuries & Associates, which is the franchise partner for Taiwan. Mercuries opened its first Dunkin’ Donuts shop in Taiwan in January 2007 and currently operates 10 shops there. Mercuries, one of the largest companies in Taiwan, brings 25 years of retail experience operating multiple consumer brands in the region.

“Mercuries is very proud to be Dunkin’ Donuts’ local partner to introduce the high-quality coffee and baked goods of this brand to the people of Mainland China,” said Mercuries food division president Andrew Chang.

Dunkin’ Donuts has experienced strong growth in Taipei in its first year of operation there. The brand will continue to expand in 2008 with an additional 10 stores planned.

The shops in Mainland China will offer a complete menu of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee, espresso, teas and frozen beverages, along with a variety of donuts, bagels and baked goods. The shop will also serve items customized to suit local taste preferences such as green tea and honeydew melon donuts, as well as mochi rings, which are similar to cake donuts but made with rice flour indigenous to the region.

“We are excited about the positive reception Dunkin’ Donuts has received in Asia and we look forward to further expanding our presence in additional regions in mainland China in the future,” concluded Will Kussell, president and chief brand officer for Dunkin’ Donuts Worldwide.

Armajaro Establishes Coffee Sourcing Business in Brazil

Armajaro, the global commodities group, will expand into Brazil with the establishment of a coffee sourcing and trading business.

Armajaro is a supplier of Robusta coffee from its operations in Vietnam, Indonesia and Cote d’Ivoire. Entry into the Brazilian market will enable Armajaro to extend its sourcing capabilities to cover Arabica coffee. Cesar Calmon, who was previously with the Volcafe/ED & F Man group, will manage the Brazilian business.

Tully’s Settles Lawsuit with Former Licensee for Asia

Tully’s Coffee Corporation has established a new joint venture for development of the firm’s business in Asia and has settled the lawsuit with its former licensee (UCC Ueshima Coffee Co. Ltd) for Asia.

Tully’s Coffee Asia Pacific, Inc. (TCAP), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tully’s, and Asia Food Culture Management Pte, Ltd (AFCM) entered into a limited partnership agreement that established a new joint venture called Tully’s Coffee Asia Pacific Partners, LP (Tully’s Coffee Asia). The new joint venture will seek to develop the Tully’s brand in Asia (excluding Japan), Australia and New Zealand through franchising and licensing activities, retail store operations, coffee roasting, wholesale distribution and other business activities. AFCM is a newly established enterprise managed by Kouta Matsuda, the founder and former CEO of Tully’s Coffee Japan.

Asian Barista Championship to be held at Food & Hotel Asia 2008

A competition between Asia’s best professional baristas will be held April 22 - 24 at the Singapore Expo in conjunction with FHA2008 (Food & Hotel Asia 2008). The Asia Barista Championship is a regional event that seeks to develop the growth, quality and recognition of the barista profession in Asia, as well as to cultivate a stronger appreciation and awareness of specialty coffee and the role of a barista in the specialty coffee industry. Participants from Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand will compete for the title of “Asia Barista Champion.”

During the Championship, every competitor will serve each of the sensory judges a single espresso, a single cappuccino and a single blended signature beverage of his/her choice, for a total of 12 drinks during the period of 15 minutes or less. Although four drinks of each category must be identical and served simultaneously, the competitor is not restricted to produce different latte art for the drinks prepared. The quality of the latte art will be taken into consideration for the “Best Latte Art Competition.” Competitors will be judged based on: competition area, taste evaluation, beverage presentation, technical skills and judges total impression. Other awards in the Championship include the “Best Espresso Trophy” and “Best Blended Signature Beverage Trophy.”

The Asia Barista Championship is jointly organized by Singapore Exhibition Services, organizer of FHA2008; Kerry Ingredients Asia, supplier of specific ingredients for food manufacturers and foodservice companies; and the Singapore Coffee Association.
