The SCA introduces the Master of Specialty Coffee

The Specialty Coffee Association (SCA), the world’s largest coffee trade association representing professionals across more than 100 countries, has launched the Master of Specialty Coffee, the highest professional distinction in specialty coffee.
Developed with the world’s leading coffee experts, the Master of Specialty Coffee establishes, for the first time, a global apex credential for the professionals who have built the specialty coffee industry into one of the most intellectually rigorous disciplines in food and beverage. It is the definitive answer to a question the industry has long been ready to answer: what does true mastery in coffee look like?
Coffee is one of the most complex products on earth. More than 2.25 billion cups are consumed every day, shaped by hundreds of distinct aromatic compounds, grown across more than 70 countries, and defined by thousands of decisions made across origin, supply chain, and craft. The science is established. The research exists. The educational infrastructure has been built. Specialty coffee has spent decades developing the frameworks, the institutions, and the professional culture capable of defining mastery at the highest level. The industry has arrived at the point where that definition is not only possible; it is necessary.
Every great discipline reaches a moment when its accumulated knowledge, research, and professional excellence demand a new kind of recognition. Culinary excellence has the Michelin star, wine has the Master of Wine; now, Master of Specialty Coffee takes its place alongside the highest distinctions in food and beverage.
Criteria
The Master of Specialty Coffee sits at the apex of professional coffee education. Candidates must hold all four SCA diplomas and a current Q Grader license, and demonstrate significant professional experience across the coffee world, supported by recommendations from respected industry figures. Candidates who meet eligibility requirements complete a rigorous application process including a knowledge assessment and oral interview, before being invited to a five-day immersive preparatory program.
Small by design, the program brings together the most knowledgeable coffee professionals in the world for real-world case studies, small-group collaboration, communication and media training, and peer discussion. Entry to the first cohort is subject to a series of scenario-based final assessments spanning sustainability, roast and retail, green coffee, and multi-audience communication.
Commenting on the new credential, Yannis Apostolopoulos, CEO, SCA, “When I look at what the specialty coffee industry has built over the last few decades, the research, the education, the professional standards, it is genuinely remarkable. We have taken one of the world’s most complex products and built an entire professional discipline around truly understanding it. The Master of Specialty Coffee is the moment that discipline gets the recognition it has earned. For the SCA, this is what decades of dedication has been building toward.”
Peter Giuliano, the SCA’s senior advisor of science communication and engagement strategy, shared, “When you look at what we understand about coffee today compared to even two decades ago – the agronomy, the chemistry, the supply chain complexity, the sensory science – the depth of knowledge required to work at the highest level of this industry is genuinely extraordinary. We have spent years working alongside the world’s leading coffee experts to map that knowledge and define what it looks like at its most complete.”
Coffee has hundreds of distinct aromatic compounds, Giuliano noted, adding, “It is grown across more than 70 countries, each with its own ecology, culture, and tradition. The professional who truly masters this field carries a breadth of scientific, agricultural, economic, and sensory expertise that is unlike anything else in food and beverage. The Master of Specialty Coffee exists to recognize that, and to hold it to the standard it deserves.”
The First Masters
According to the SCA, the professionals who will pursue the Master of Specialty Coffee are already among the most distinguished in the industry. They hold all four SCA Diplomas and current Q Grader Licenses. They work across every part of the coffee world — growing and processing at origin, importing and exporting green coffee, roasting, and the commercial craft of specialty coffee at its finest. Some own the cafés that have defined what specialty coffee looks like in their cities. Others have shaped the roasting, sourcing, and trading practices of the global industry. All have dedicated their professional lives to the pursuit of a single question: what does coffee, at its very best, look like?
The Master of Specialty Coffee will be the most knowledgeable, most credentialed, and most rigorously assessed coffee professionals on earth, sought-after voices for international press, industry forums, scientific research, and the next generation of coffee education. Applications for the first cohort will open in late 2026, with the inaugural cohort beginning in 2027. The first cohort will be between 15 and 20 candidates, small by design, significant by definition.
