Groundswell, the Golden Globe-winning documentary from the filmmakers behind Kiss The Ground (2020) and Common Ground (2023), takes viewers on a “regenerative road trip” to meet the pioneers of the global movement to restore the earth’s soil — a journey which led to the farm of Ruben Agudelo, a Nespresso partner farmer.

Building on the success of the first two films in the trilogy, Groundswell premiered at the Cannes International Film Festival 2026. The film also includes on-camera narration from Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson, who are advocates for the movement to restore the Earth’s soil through regenerative practices. It can be streamed globally on Amazon Prime.

Josh Tickell (director) said, “The first two films in this trilogy explain the potential of soil as a climate solution, and in Groundswell, we wanted to focus on what this looks like within the global agricultural system. We started out with two fundamental questions: how does the food we eat impact soil, and how does soil impact our food?”

Rebecca Harrell Tickell (director) added, “Coffee became a doorway into a much bigger story,” said Rebecca Harrell Tickell, director of Groundswell. “When you begin asking where our food comes from, you inevitably begin asking what kind of world we are creating. What moved us most in Colombia was seeing that regeneration is not theoretical. It is measurable in the soil, in biodiversity, in farmer resilience, and in the quality of the food itself. These solutions are already working around the world.”

The coffee farm shown in Groundswell is owned by Don Ruben Agudelo, who has participated in the Nespresso Sustainable Quality Plan for 20 years. Over the years, he has transitioned to regenerative agricultural practices which are delivering measurable impacts in ecosystem health, such as the return of certain bird species. He takes Groundswell viewers on a tour of his five acres to show how, exceptional coffee starts with living soil — rich in plants, micro-organisms, and nutrients.

Ruben Aguedelo said, “I follow regenerative agriculture principles that focus on soil health. Healthy soil is dark and moist, rich with life, and provides all the nutrients my coffee trees need to thrive, producing healthy and flavorful beans.”

“Regenerative agriculture has emerged as one of the most hopeful solutions of our time,” said Rebecca Harrell Tickell. “What inspired us in Colombia was not just the beauty of the landscape, but the proof that long-term investment in soil health can restore biodiversity, strengthen farming communities, and improve the quality of what we consume every day. This is not about going backward. It is about evolving agriculture toward a healthier future.”

Coffee is largely grown by smallholder farmers in regions already highly exposed to climate volatility. Without healthy soil, the fundamental pillars of the industry are at risk: the premium quality of the coffee, the volume of the harvest yielded each season, and the vital incomes that support these farming communities. Regenerative agriculture is therefore a business imperative that the company has been working toward for 23 years through its Nespresso Plan. Today, 85% of coffee sourced through the Nespresso Plan comes from farms practicing regenerative agriculture (verified by Enveritas).

At the Cannes International Film Festival, Nespresso was announced as the first company to sign the One Billion Acres pledge, a landmark movement founded by the filmmakers to accelerate the impact of Groundswell.

“Regenerative agriculture is the future – and not only for high-quality coffee. Thanks to these incredible movies, including Groundswell, millions of consumers worldwide appreciate the benefits of regenerative agriculture and understand the positive impact they can drive through the brands they choose. By signing this pledge, we hope to inspire other companies to invest in the regenerative agriculture revolution,” said Alfonso Gonzalez Loeschen, CEO of Nestlé Nespresso SA.
