Percol Coffee’s compostable capsules win UK packaging Award

The new range of compostable coffee pods created by UK-based Percol Coffee Co. have been rewarded for their innovation at the 2016 UK Packaging Awards.

The Nespresso-compatible capsules, developed by ATI (Advanced Technology Innovations) in collaboration with Bio4pack and Futamura were awarded third place in the Resource Efficient Pack of the Year category amongst a competitive field of 50 nominees. The custom coffee capsules are made from natural and readily renewable raw materials and are fully compostable.

As the newest addition to the Percol Coffee Co. line, the compostable coffee capsules are a key driving force behind the Percol Pod Revolution, a campaign aimed at reducing the amount of coffee pods that end up in landfill. The packaging was commended for reducing its environmental impact without compromising the quality of the coffee.

The current volume estimate for Nespresso capsule use globally is 16 billion capsules (one aluminium capsule weighs approximately one gram, meaning 16 million kilos are used per year).

In 2015, 15 percent of Nespresso capsules were recycled.

Niomi Taylor, marketing manager at Percol Coffee Co. said via a statement, “We’re delighted to have been recognised at the UK Packaging Awards. We’re very proud of the Percol Pod Revolution and the steps we’ve taken to reduce our environmental impact, so to be recognised amongst such a strong field of fellow nominees is testament to the hard work we’ve put into this new range.

The new Nespresso compatible capsules are made with organic and Rainforest Alliance Arabica beans and slow roasted for a smoother, rich taste and available in three flavours; Rainforest Alliance Americano Lungo, Organic Ethiopia Espresso and Rainforest Alliance Supremo Ristretto.

“We’d like to thank our production and manufacturing partners for all their support and hard work” said Taylor. “Working alongside them meant we were able to achieve our goal of fully compostable capsules that allow us to continue to provide great-tasting coffee to our customers!”
