Keurig® today launched the Keurig Alta™ System, marking the biggest revolution of the Keurig brewing system and a new era for at-home coffee. Featuring plastic-free and aluminum-free AltaRounds pressed coffee, the Keurig Alta system brings a new level of sustainability to the single serve format while offering consumers greater variety, authentic barista-style beverages, and effortless convenience, all in one system. From rich coffee and velvety espresso to luscious lattes and more, hot and iced, the Keurig Alta system brings an expansive café-style menu home at the press of a button.
Nearly three decades after pioneering the single-serve coffee category, Keurig is reimagining what single serve can be, with a platform designed for how consumers drink coffee today and what they will want next. Today, more than 47 million households across the US and Canada use a Keurig brewer. The Keurig Alta system builds on that legacy by expanding the Keurig experience beyond traditional coffee and into authentic espresso and café-style beverages, without adding complexity.
“Everyone should be able to make exceptional coffee at home, without compromise or complex techniques,” said Phil Drapeau, senior vice president, Future Coffee Systems for Keurig Dr Pepper. “To make it possible, we removed the plastic pod, so nothing stands between you and the coffee.”
At the heart of the system is AltaRounds pressed coffee. Inspired by a barista’s tamping technique, expertly roasted coffee beans are ground, pressed and wrapped in a proprietary plant-based coating. Each AltaRounds pressed coffee features a recipe code that the Keurig Alta brewer automatically reads, adjusting pressure, temperature and the water-to coffee ratio to brew each beverage as intended. The Keurig Alta brewer can deliver up to 10 bars of high-pressure extraction for authentic espresso, while using optimised pressure brewing for every style of brew. Together with an integrated milk frother, the system makes it simple to move from rich coffee to authentic espresso, lattes, cappuccinos, cortados and more, hot or iced, all from one brewer.
“The plant-based coating of the AltaRounds makes this system possible,” said Neha Mallik, senior director of product development, Keurig Dr Pepper. “It withstands the pressure authentic espresso requires while delivering the simplicity consumers expect from Keurig. After brewing, the grounds and coating come out as one piece that can be composted or disposed of like coffee grounds.”
AltaRounds pressed coffee is certified by BPI as home and commercially compostable, and its proprietary coating is NSF-certified and made from plant-based materials, including alginate, which is derived from seaweed. The first AltaRounds pressed coffee brand available in the system, Keurig Alta Coffee and Espresso, launches in six varieties:
• Single Shot (medium roast single espresso)
• Double Shot (dark roast double espresso)
• Bold Ambition (dark roast coffee)
• The House (medium roast coffee)
• Fresh Take (light roast coffee)
• Sweet Spot (caramel flavoured coffee)
Peet’s Coffee, a foundational brand in the Keurig Alta System, will follow soon, with more coffee brands expected as the system grows.
The Keurig Alta System is now available in the US at KeurigAlta.com for USD $499.99, following a limited pre-order that sold out in less than 24 hours. AltaRounds pressed coffee come in packs of eight, priced from $9.99-10.99 depending on variety.
Consumers can enroll in AutoRefresh recurring delivery, so their favourite coffees and espressos arrive automatically. The system is also backward compatible with Keurig K-Cup® pods, so consumers can continue brewing their favourite Keurig K-Cup® varieties.
