This harvest season, as Canadians enjoy the bounty from local farms and markets, the Tea & Herbal Association of Canada is inviting consumers to think about another agricultural product that begins in the ground: tea. The new campaign, Farmed with Care, highlights that tea, like the grain, fruits and vegetables we enjoy from Canadian fields, is grown on farms, cared for by skilled workers and carefully harvested.

While tea is the second most consumed beverage in the world after water, many people don’t realize that it comes from a plant. Every cup of tea begins with the Camellia sinensis plant, which is grown in tea-producing countries such as China, India, Japan, Sri Lanka, Kenya and Malawi.

“Tea is one of the most familiar items in Canadian households, yet people rarely think about where it comes from,” says Shabnam Weber, president of the Tea & Herbal Association of Canada. “When Canadians see corn, carrots or apples on their plates, it’s easy to imagine the farms they came from. But tea, too, is an agricultural crop that begins in the soil and is farmed with the same care as any other harvest.”

Six in ten Canadians drink hot tea, whether it’s black, green, white or oolong. From breakfast blends to afternoon infusions, tea is a part of daily life across the country. Yet because tea isn’t commercially grown in Canada, it can be easy to forget that it’s a farmed product. One that requires careful cultivation and skilled hands to grow, pluck and process.

From fields and orchards to vineyards and tea gardens, every crop we enjoy is nurtured by people who care deeply about their work. The Farmed with Care campaign is a reminder that behind every sip of tea are farmers, families and communities who make it possible.

As Canadians celebrate the harvest season, the Tea & Herbal Association of Canada invites everyone to take a moment to appreciate the journey from bush to cup, and to remember that tea, too, is #FarmedWithCare.
