SCA hosts first Spanish-language webinar

The SCA Sustainability Center is hosting a fourth webinar with the Farmer Profitability and Prosperity working group – it will be the first SCA webinar completely in Spanish.

The webinar will be moderated by Juan Luis Barrios and the topic is “Strategies for Income Diversification in Coffee Producing Areas.”

The webinar is part of a series addressing the challenges facing coffee farmers and the sustainability of coffee, especially in light of the current price crisis. Beginning one year ago in January, a panel of industry leaders used the literature review released by the SCA at the end of 2017 as a starting point to discuss difficult questions related to the profitability of coffee farming. Since then, two more webinars have taken place. You can find the recorded webinars and Q&As with panelists here.

With coffee prices in the futures market below cost of production (again) in most coffee producing countries—and that this is unlikely to change in the near future—coffee producers need to find other ways to sustain themselves. One of the possible solutions is diversification of income.

The panelists will share their experiences of three kinds of successful income diversification: in-country consumption of coffee, intercropping with coffee, and other sources of income.

Moderator: Juan Luis Barrios – member of the SCAA board of directors.
Panelists: Celeste Fumagalli – Gold Grains Coffee, Guatemala; Omar Rodriguez – Cooperativa Cafetalera Capucas, Honduras; Rigoberto Pineda – Soppexcca, Nicaragua.

The webinar is taking place 19 February at 9 am PDT / 5 pm GMT. Find out more about the panelists and register here.
