Mozzo Coffee expands life-saving support for Rebuild Women’s Hope

This International Women’s Day, Mozzo Coffee is celebrating its partnership with Rebuild Women’s Hope Coffee Cooperative and the $60,000 pledged to expand Matumaini Hospital on Idjwi Island, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Over half the target has already been reached through donating 100% of profits from sales of Mozzo’s Rebuild Women’s Hope coffee collection and contributions from their C2C (Community2Community) Fund™. Achieving the $60k target will fund the building of a vital new intensive care unit and operating theatre for the community.
Since opening in 2020, the current hospital (built through Mozzo Coffee’s C2C Fund contributions) has provided critical maternal and paediatric care, helping to safely deliver over 4,000 babies on an island where less than 50% of pregnancies were successful. Before its construction, women faced dangerous journeys of up to 30km on foot or motorbike. They often gave birth in a field or in canoes on the shore, with only the help of untrained locals. Some women would risk crossing Lake Kivu for urgent medical attention in Rwanda. Sadly several expectant mothers tragically drowned before reaching the mainland, others were turned away once they reached Rwandan services.
Mozzo Coffee is proud of the success of the Matumaini (meaning “Hope” in Swahili) Hospital and the impact it has had for the whole community on Idjwi Island (the clinic treats men as well as women and children, for a variety of medical needs from injury, infection and disease to malnutrition and ante- and post-natal care). However, they are not stopping there. Having now pledged a further $60,000 for the hospital extension, Mozzo Coffee is determined to ensure the life-saving care of the clinic continues through facilitating vital emergency surgery, including caesarean birth, and urgent medical care for the critically ill.
