Honduras Cup of Excellence celebrates coffee diversity

Cup of Excellence (CoE) and the Honduran Coffee Institute (Ihcafe) announce 25 Cup of Excellence winners in this year’s 20th edition of the competition for the country’s best coffees. The CoE-winning coffees, representing 10 municipalities in Honduras reflect 9 varieties, three processes, and two Presidential Award winners. This year’s winners also represent five first-time participants. The top three coffees, which won the Comandante “Top Farm” trophy grinder, are all washed coffees.

The first-place winner, a washed Gesha from finca La Salsa scored 91.25 points. This coffee was produced by Benjamin Paz Muñoz who took 5th place in last year’s competition.

“I am filled with gratitude for having achieved this goal. It is a dream come true. Not only do I win, but I also win a community and an entire region. The cup has returned to the state of Santa Barbara,” said Benjamin Paz Muñoz.

The second-place winning coffee, a washed Gesha and Pacamara Amarillo blend from finca Santa Lucia in Siguatepeque, Comayagua, produced by the Miersch family under Desarrollos Santa Lucia S.A, scored 90.03 points. They took 1st place in last year’s competition. The third-place winning coffee, from finca La Colmena in the Santa Barbara region, was produced by David Omar Muños Ulloa and scored 89.5 points.

This year’s competition began with 155 coffee samples that were evaluated by a national jury composed of 12 cuppers.
