Inaugural Indonesia Cup of Excellence prepares for auction

Cup of Excellence (CoE) and the Specialty Coffee Association of Indonesia (SCAI) have announced 26 Cup of Excellence and 6 National Winner coffees in the 1st Indonesia Cup of Excellence. The winners showcase the diversity and potential of Indonesian coffee, representing 8 islands and offering a wide array of varieties and processes. Dilen Ali Gogo’s honey process Ateng, Gayo 1 and P88 blend from Pantan Musara, Aceh province took first place with the highest score of 89.28.

The first-ever Indonesia Cup of Excellence saw enthusiasm from farmers: “The number of participants shows that the producers are excited and are interested in this programme, despite the challenges we are having to socialise the programme itself, especially during the pandemic. Hopefully, in the upcoming years, we will see more participants, and more well-prepared coffees,” said Daryanto Witarsa, the president of SCAI.

“This historic moment for CoE and for Indonesia marks our program’s first time in this part of the world. We are very happy by the response as well as the quality of coffees entered from this very special coffee origin,” said Darrin Daniel, CoE and ACE executive director.

The Cup of Excellence auction will be held on 27 January 2022, and the National Winner Auction will run from 24 January to 4 February 2022. Though some producers have already seen results from their participation in the first Indonesia Cup of Excellence.

“We have some producers, cooperatives being contacted by new local buyers and also some international buyers, especially after the winner announcement,” said Andi Widjaja, Indonesia CoE country coordinator stated.

“The programme is a great way to introduce transparency and traceability and promotes a sustainable industry,” he added, reflecting on the ecosystem goals for the coffee industry in Indonesia.

Sample sets are sold out, however, buying groups are now forming. Samples delivery and lot delivery are handled by PT INDOKOM CITRA PERSADA as the official exporter of Indonesia COE 2021.
