Allegro Coffee Releases Limited-Edition Galapagos La Tortuga for the Holidays

Allegro Coffee Company is releasing limited quantities of the new Galapagos La Tortuga in all six Allegro Coffee Roasters locations. The medium-light roast invokes notes of honeydew melon, demerara sugar, and nougat. It will be available for purchase on 1 November.

La Tortuga is a coffee characterized by its unique and magical geographic location: the Galapagos Island is a beautiful Ecuadorian archipelago of volcanic islands located on the Pacific Ocean, 906 kilometers from continental Ecuador. The Galapagos are known for Darwin’s Theory of Evolution due to the vast number of species that he found during his voyage in 1836, including the famous 100-year-old giant turtles. It’s also home to the exotic coffee of La Tortuga.

The Cooperativa de Cafetaleros de Galapagos, a collective of over 80 producers, started in 1997 with the purpose of protecting the coffee industry on the island while conserving natural resources and the environment. All farmers in Galapagos are highly conscious about the animals and species that inhabit the island; in fact, they strongly believe that the owners of the land are the animals and nature itself.

This lot comes from Rolf Eduardo Ballesteros, a single producer of the cooperative. Ballesteros grows a mix of Typica, Caturra and Bourbon coffee shrubs on five hectares under Cedrela, Guabos, and native shade trees. He uses the traditional fully-washed method for processing in his micro-mill and dry ferments his wet parchment for 14 to 18 hours. It is then sun-dried in parabolic-covered patios on raised drying beds.

“I am pleased to offer coffee from this brilliantly diversified cooperative for the holiday season,” says Christy Thorns, director of sourcing, Allegro Coffee, Denver, Colorado. “Our Galapagos La Tortuga is a delicious sampling of the unique beans grown on the island, and a gift to be coveted by any coffee lover.”

Galapagos La Tortuga will be available for purchase on November 1 at all six Allegro Coffee Roasters locations at USD $18.99 for an 8-oz bag.

Allegro Coffee Company was founded in 1977 in Boulder, Colorado, and was one of the first certified organic roasters in the country. Whole Foods Market acquired Allegro in 1997; since then Whole Foods Market has offered Allegro’s coffee as its signature house roast.
