Elixr Coffee Opens New Roasting Facility in Philadelphia

Elixr Coffee Roasters opened a new facility in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with a 2,000 square foot roastery, on 3 August 2018.

Since opening its first location in 2010, Evan Inatome’s coffee brand has become one of the busiest of its kind in Philadelphia. The flagship café is located at 207 S Syndenham Street in Rittenhouse (between 15th and 16th and Walnut and Locust Streets), and there are additional cafés in University City and street level at Michael Schulson’s Double Knot.

Elixr’s new café and roastery, located at 315 N 12th Street (at Wood Street), offers a similar experience to that of the flagship café. The new venue is 800 square feet larger than the Sydenham Street location. It is divided by wood and glass doors, so guests can see what is going on in the roasting plant when they enter the coffee shop. The new café also features an “omakase coffee” tasting bar, where Elixr’s coffee professionals conceive and craft five unique cups of coffee in unique flights for coffee fanatics to enjoy. Coffee options will change monthly.

“This is a really exciting time for Elixr,” says Inatome. “I came to Philly to realize my dream of launching a serious coffee business about eight years ago, and I knew when I arrived in the city that it was the right time and place open. We’ve grown so much over the past couple of years, and we have some really amazing things to finally unveil with the opening of our new roastery.”

With Inatome is Elixr’s “star” barista, T Benjamin Fischer, who earned second place honours at the 2018 US Barista Championships in Seattle, Washington in April. In 2015, he finished in third place in the Big Central Competition. He took home second place in America’s Best Espresso Competition in Baltimore in 2018 and has several other top-ten finishes in various barista competitions. At the US Coffee Championships, Fischer provided a 15-minute presentation on his signature espresso beverage, which will be featured at Elixr and Double Knot. The signature drink, The ‘Strawberry Fog Espresso Sour,’ features four shots of espresso chilled in an ice bath, 15 grams of simple syrup, five grams of egg white, seven grams of lime juice, shaken, and is served with a strawberry aromatic fog utilizing dry ice layered on top. “I pulled inspiration from La Palma Y El Tucan, a finca I visited in Colombia,” Fischer says.

“I saw [T Benjamin] compete years ago, saw his passion, and now I’m certain that he is one among the very best in the industry,” says Inatome. “He’s now in the rising ranks of the company, is part of the buying, education, training and everything else you can imagine a small artisan coffee brand like ours needs. He has an integral role in this company now.”
