Melitta NA Completes Multi-Year Renovation of Roasting Facility

Melitta North America, headquartered in Clearwater, Florida, has completed a multi-year update to its Cherry Hill, New Jersey-based roasting facility. The update is part of an ongoing commitment to produce premium coffee offerings that meet changing market demands and help B2B customers bring successful coffee offerings to market.

Among the many updates to the roasting facility, the installation of a Probat Neptune 3000 drum roaster has enabled Melitta to maintain its focus on small-batch roasting while elevating the quality and consistency of the finished product. The ability to blend coffee before and after roasting has also expanded the spectrum of flavour profiles Melitta offers its customers. The end result is the ability to produce virtually any type of coffee.

“While the coffee market is extremely exciting, organizations often struggle to overcome its complexities,” says Ron Rineer, B2B business manager, Melitta North America. “When B2B customers partner with Melitta, we draw on our full range of experience to help them navigate those complexities to produce coffees that meet consumer tastes and drive sales. These updates further enhance our ability to accomplish that mission by increasing our capabilities and further elevating the quality of our products.”

Melitta also looked outside of the actual roasting process for improvements. Additional measures were taken to elevate quality control including the installation of advanced X-ray foreign matter detection systems, state-of-the-art nitrogen flushing systems to ensure oxygen levels are at a guaranteed level of less than 2%, and an air filtration system that uses 13 MERV filters to remove pollen, bacteria and other air born contaminants from the facility.

“Bringing a successful coffee to market on a large scale is about much more than sourcing great beans and roasting them in small batches,” says Vincent Tagliaferro, plant manager, Melitta North America. “The entire process from harvest to shelf has to be done with the utmost care to ensure a finished product that tastes great, is consistent, and is affordable. We work with our B2B partners to shoulder that burden while creating products that are tailored to meet their unique needs.”

To support Melitta’s continued commitment to sustainability, the facility updates also included a $1.3 million photovoltaic solar energy system. The clean energy generated by that system equates to saving 458,732 pounds of coal from being burned, or recycling 146 tons of waste instead of dumping it in a landfill.

Melitta’s commitment to quality systems ensures that B2B customers receive coffee that consistently matches their specifications and quality expectations. The company’s commitment to quality is reinforced by strict standards set by FSSC 22000 Food Safety System Certification and is fully recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI).
