Book Review: The Spirit of Tea

Touching on tea’s transcendental nature, Frank Hadley Murphy builds a thorough treatment of more conventional information about tea - the history of its cultivation, the six classical groupings of tea (White, Yellow, Green, Oolong, Black [or Red in China] and Puerh), the distinctive aromas and tastes of each group, methods of brewing and the botany of tea. Murphy discusses tea’s psychoactive qualities and describes its heretofore-undocumented mystical attributes, paying close attention to the effects that particular varieties have on one’s spirit.

In addition, the book covers both the healing effects of tea and consequences that can arise from overindulgence, proposing remedies that can be used in response to the latter. Murphy weaves his personal experience into his narrative throughout the work, so that areas of discussion that might be susceptible to an academic treatment are here infused with the author’s reverence and love for his subject. The work also contains a number of poems that have arisen out of the author’s experiences with tea.
