Barnie’s Appoints Karas
Barnie’s Coffee & Tea Co. has appointed Don Karas as vice chairman. Don, founding publisher of Restaurant Business Magazine and the Karas Report, spent 20 years as director of the Wolfgang Puck Express restaurants, which provided him with industry expertise in marketing, franchising operations, and real estate development. The company feels that he will help to add momentum to the growth of ice cream and specialty milk drinks.
Autocrat Coffee Names Ricci Rathburn
Autocrat Coffee and Extracts, of Lincoln, Rhode Island, a producer of coffee ingredients, has hired Ricci Rathburn as national account executive for Coffee on Demand.

Ricci previously held managerial positions with various companies including Douwe Egberts Coffee Systems, LaTouraine Coffee Co. as well as Techni-Brew International and Today Foods Co., both divisions of Boyd Coffee Co. Autocrat notes that she has significant experience in sales, customer support, marketing and product and program development.

Ricci will be responsible for managing, increasing and growing market share by expanding the number of accounts using Coffee on Demand. Autocrat recently introduced Coffee on Demand to the product line. Autocrat uses the concept of liquid bag-in-box to deliver coffee on demand that is of superb quality and consistent taste, says the company.

First Colony Promotes Devaney to Director of Finance
First Colony has promoted Barbara Devaney to director of finance and accounting. Devaney is responsible for all aspects of financial management and reporting. She also oversees the A/R, A/P, MIS, sales support, assets management and inventory control departments. Responsibilities that require a lot of dedication and strength, characteristics that she has clearly demonstrated.

Devaney joined the First Colony team in 1991 as the head of the MIS department. Over the years, Devaney has taken on increasing responsibility and performed exceptionally well. Her talents will be well utilized in her new position.

STI Selects Jage for 9th Annual Tea Symposium
The Specialty Tea Institute has appointed George Jage, president, World Tea Expo as the chairman for the 9th Annual Tea Symposium. The Symposium will be held on April 7-8, 2006 in conjunction with the SCAA Conference and Exhibition in Charlotte, North Carolina.

“I am very excited to work with George on the 2006 Tea Symposium,” Kisha Omer, STI program coordinator said. She added, “This year will be our biggest event yet! With the growth of the STI Tea Certification Program, we will be offering our Level One, Two and the East Coast introduction of Level Three. In addition, George along with the appointed conference committee, will organize the high valued content and topics that will be presented at the general session seminars, themed “The Time for Tea is NOW!” I am expecting our best Symposium to date!”

Guayaki Hires Vice President of Sales
Guayaki Sustainable Rainforest Products, a yerba mate company located in San Luis Obispo, California, has hired Patrick Lee as vice president of sales. Prior to Guayaki, Lee was the president of nSpired Natural Foods, a provider of natural and organic food products. During two years at nSpired, Lee grew the company’s sales from $30 million to $60 million. Before that accomplishment, Lee was senior vice president of sales & marketing for Balance Bar and instrumental in boosting their sales from $10 million to $100 million.

The company has recently introduced a new line of Organic Yerba Mate Energy Drinks, a pair of new Mate Latte Concentrates and a revamped line of yerba mate teabags. All efforts to continue their established success and growth in the industry.

SCAA Honors Gordon
The Specialty Coffee Association of America awarded Sterling Gordon, former president of specialty coffee roaster and importer, Coffee Holding Co., the Mose Drachman award at their membership reception at the Juan Valdez café in New York City. The award, named after Mose Drachmanm, a highly successful salesman for Arbuckle Brothers at the turn of the 19th century, is given in recognition to members of the coffee community who exemplify the highest standards of customer service.

Sterling Gordon founded Coffee Holding Co. in 1971. He is the father of Andrew Gordon, president and c.e.o. of Coffee Holding, David Gordon, executive vice president,

and Karen Gordon, director of specialty green sales.
