Teekanne to Celebrate 125th Birthday

Teekanne GmbH, headquartered in Düsseldorf, Germany, is one of the world’s largest tea merchants. Teekanne GmbH started out exactly 125 years ago in Dresden, as Anglo-Asiatic tea culture began catching on in Germany. Drinking tea and acquiring tea paraphernalia became chic. What started out back then as a tiny shop for “Japanese and Chinese Goods and Teas” was to grow in time to become the global brand Teekanne we know today. Entrepreneurs Rudolf Anders and Eugen Nissle had a vision even as they opened this very first location in Dresden: that tea should be an affordable pleasure for everyone – easy to the measure out and easy to prepare for the same excellent quality every time. Anders and Nissle pioneered the breakthrough idea of selling tea pre-measured for serving as a brand item. This enabled them to guarantee the consistent exquisite quality so important to consumers despite variable tea harvests.

The Teekane Group, parent company of both Teepack and the Teehaus corporation based in Dresden, maintains eight production and office facilities worldwide in addition to a robust international network of distribution partners. Last year Teekanne exports rose to account for 54% of consolidated revenues as the company moved into several new markets. In the Czech Republic Teekanne overtook the former market leader, likewise becoming number one in the herbal tea segment in Japan. Plans are to continue expanding and growing the business to occupy additional markets.

The Coffee Quality Institute Awarded New Contracts

August, 2007 (Long Beach, CA) – The Coffee Quality Institute, a non-profit organization whose mission is to improve the quality of coffee and the lives of the people who produce it, was awarded two separate contracts to train cuppers and establish its Q Grading Program in Kenya and Ethiopia.

The first contract, currently underway in Ethiopia, is a training agreement with Fintrac, Inc., a company specializing in agricultural development programs around the world, and Boot Coffee Consulting, a consulting firm specializing in strategic marketing and quality improvement programs for the coffee industry. The work is supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) - funded Agribusiness and Trade Expansion Program (ATEP) which includes an emphasis on developing the specialty coffee industry in Ethiopia. The second project, scheduled to start in September, was awarded by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a division of the World Bank Group, whose purpose is to promote sustainable private sector investment in developing countries, helping to reduce poverty and improve people's lives.

With both projects, the emphasis is on cupping training, which benefits origin countries by enabling them to correctly identify specialty and premium coffees and to correctly assess the required quality improvements, both of which are vital steps to increasing farmer incomes. Under these contracts, each of the countries will also establish Q Grading Services to allow for coffees to be graded in-country, using industry-accepted standards. With both countries, this capability is expected to improve their competitiveness in higher-paying specialty markets.
